The Value of Human Connection

Skype makes things Human Interesting by changing the world one human connection at a time.

From day one, Skype was created to advance peer-to-peer communications.

The name for the software is derived from “Sky peer-to-peer,” which was then abbreviated to “Skyper.” Because the domain name associated with “Skyper” was taken, dropping the final “r” resulted in the current brand name “Skype.”

Skype knows it’s much more than an online video-calling service. It understands the true worth of its technology lies in the value of human connections and how they affect people’s day-to-day lives. Because Skype understands its inherent value to its customers, marketing initiatives are less about the technology and more about the human connections people make through Skype.

Skype’s recent ad campaign tells three stories of people separated by thousands of miles. The “Stay Together” stories relate why interacting with others is so important to people, and why favorite memories are often the simplest — moments like laughing, cooking meals together, and recalling the events of the day. People use Skype in a variety of ways, including keeping in touch with their pets, scheduling therapy appointments, hosting craft beer production meetings, helping young leukemia patients fight loneliness, and teaching violin lessons around the world.

According to Advertising Age, Skype now accounts for 40% of the entire conventional international telecom market. Which means, four minutes out of every 10 spent making international phone calls on mobile networks and landlines are spent on Skype. Clearly, Skype is out to change the world one human connection at a time.
